wayback in middle school, one of my teachers asked us, ‘Is anyone here not scared to die?’ after a pause, someone put their hand up, and it was me. at that point, i thought dying meant being brave, or maybe i was just trying to prove i wasn’t afraid of anything. as a 14-year-old girl who didn’t really understand the how the society works, I just felt confident enough to raise my hand with great assurance to the question.
soha, who seems to be feeling a bit lost, stumbled upon a peculiar poster about the grapefruit apricot club on their notice board. naturally, her curiosity got the better of her, and she decided to get the ticket and join the club. it turns out, this club isn’t officially recognised at their school. there she met Ha Tae-su, Na Yumin and Lee Bo-hyeon, and a new friendship blossomed without any pressure.
this book cleverly divides the story into sections for each character, which helps the reader keep track of what’s happening and understand their place in the narrative. which i think that’s a great feature! and easy to read..
I’d say grapefruit club is like a rainbow🌈 it brings hope and encouragement to live. i especially admire taesu, who started the club. it's tough to be selfless when you not feeling well inside too. taesu gave me that feeling that, even though she’s the school president and always smiling, there’s a hidden trauma that has quietly crushed her. bohyeon whos fearing of losing her greatest pillar, yumin whos afraid to grow up and soha resentment towards his dad. GAC gave them a space of safety, courage and hope which somehow the world cannot give them.
i believe people somehow developes traumas everyday and to think there might be a side story of why soha's father choose to live in cruelty and why soha's mother just leave her daughter alone which is i think she didn't even deserves too.
my question is why should others pain/ trauma be passed on ? who are we going to blame for their actions ? theres no good in doing it, like a cycle but yeah the world indeed is cruel
on the other side i admire how supportive everyone is in the club, they become each other comfort and just by that i think they'll have a good memories to remember even just a little .. 🍅🍅🍅🍅
if i go back in time and my teacher asked me that question again, i will say is " dying is inevitable, instead of spending time being scared i will try to live and enjoy as much as i could" 🌈🤗 taesu are you proud of me ?
