자신의 명예가 실추되는 일은 추호도 있을 수 없었다, 있어서는 안 됐다. 치부가 드러날 바에야 죽이든가, 죽게 내버려두든가. 어찌됐건 판단의 준거는 ”나“의 명예다.

명예욕은 타인에게 인정받고자 하는 욕구, 지위나 평판을 위해 경쟁과 노력을 아끼지 않는, 오히려 결과보다 ‘어떻게 보이는지’가 중요하다.

헷갈릴 수 있겠으나 명예욕은 권력욕과는 다르다. 권력욕은 지배와 통제에 집중한다. 대체로 물욕, 권력욕, 명예욕 중에 명예욕을 제일 끊기 어려운 욕망이라고 명심보감에서는 얘기하고 있다.

인정욕구는 대체로 타인에게 갈구한다. 타인의 시선, 타인의 인정이 나를 발 딛고 서게 하는 힘이다. 평판을 중시하지 않는 사람들은 대체로 권력욕도 없다. 없어야 하나 있는 부류는 참 답답하기 짝이 없다.

무례한 부류는 명예욕이 없어야 할 것같지만 오히려 명예욕이 강해서 그런가 싶기도 하다. 뜻대로 되지 않으니 억하심정이 생기고 그러다보니 상대에게 무례를 범하는 실수를 하고 만다.

자기 만족과 자기 인정을 토대로 일을 하면 한결 마음이 편하다. 누구와 비교하고 경쟁해서 밟고 올라가려 하지 않고, 스스로의 노력과 성과를 칭찬하며 부족했을 땐 반성하며 그렇게 한발 한발 디뎌가는 것이 훨씬 의미 있다.

이는 명예욕을 덜어내는 것과도 일맥상통한다. 인간은 사회적 동물인데 누구도 지위와 평판에서 자유로울 수 없다. 다만 거기에 매몰되면 다른 것이 보이지 않고, 그보다 중한 가치도 가차없이 묵살시켜 버릴 수 있다.

인간이 인간답게 살 방도를 궁리하며, 자신을 소중히 여기는 마음에 집중할 때야 비로소 스스로 자유로워질 것이다.
